Aurora Spirit – A Trip to the World’s Northernmost Whiskey Distillery
Join us on an exciting trip that will give you a taste of culture, spectacular nature, and northern Norwegian whiskey all in one. The experience starts in Nordreisa/Sørkjosen harbour. Before we board the RIB boat, you’ll receive a tour information and safety briefing.
Out of the Fjord and Into Maursundet
When everyone is ready to go, we’ll make the trip across Reisafjorden and into Maursund, where we’ll have a short stopover at Maursund Farm.
Back to the Olden Days
In earlier times, Maursundet was considered to be very centrally located, which made the area around Maursund farm attractive to merchants from Trondheim who began trading activities towards the end of the 18th century. These days, the museum area consists of a reconstructed boathouse and a magnificent farmhouse.
Lyngen Alps
Your journey will then continue over the Lyngenfjord to the Lyngsalpene, or Lyngen Alps, which tower 1,800 meters overhead, and onward toward Årøybukt, which used to be a top-secret NATO facility. Today, it’s home to the world’s northernmost distillery.
Aurora Spirit Distillery – Whiskey Production in The Arctic
At the distillery, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the production premises and of the bunkers where whiskey, gin, and aquavit are stored. We’ll also have lunch and sample some of the drinks.
The spirit that is produced by the distillery is sold under the Bivrost brand. The Vikings called the northern lights bivrost, which meant “quivering bridge”. The Vikings thought that the northern lights were a bridge for the gods to travel between Midgard and Åsgard.
Havnnes Handelssted
On the way back home, we’ll stop at Havnnes Handelssted, where you can take a quick walk around to see its old buildings. Archaeological finds such of knives, spearheads, axes, and fishhooks show that people have settled at the location for approxiamately 6,000 years. The trading post has been owned by the Giæver family since 1868.
